Very reasonably priced, and the grains were still cool, even after several days of shipping and being left in my building lobby mailbox all day.
This is my first time culturing milk kefir, but it tastes similar to the store-bought plain milk kefir I used to buy. (But you have to blend/whip it to make it smooth) It was pretty easy to get them going, and they’re growing each week. My home is cool, usually 17-19 °C. I bought a heating mat for seedlings that increases the temp 5-10 °C, and doesn’t use much energy. It was too warm if jar was sitting on mat, and too cool sitting on counter beside the heating mat. Now I have a box with a lid, and the mat is taped around the inside of the box. It keeps it at around 23°C. Also I use a Masontops pouring-spout lid, so that if the pressure is too high (when I’m not home), the kefir can ‘burp’ without making a mess. Kefir garden are very helpful if you have questions. Packaging was excellent, not sure how you could improve it – the fresh kefir grains were inside a small, sealed, waterproof envelope, which was sealed inside a larger, waterproof envelope. This envelope assembly was shipped within an addressed bubble wrap sealed envelope.

I followed the instructions and because the temperature in my house was cool at the time of prep I put them on the rack in the oven (off with the light on, as was mentioned in the instructions as an option to keep the grains at a decent temperature). After a decade of making kefir, my grains died. Milk date was good for 3 days but it went bad early. When I make a huge batch, it takes a few days to ferment and sitting in spoiled milk, killed them off. I will make sure to reserve some grains as backup now.

Overall, I am happy with my purchase. I ordered these kefir grains to replace some grains that I had neglected. I was surprised to see such a tiny amount in the package, but they have bulked up nicely (doubling in size) in the last week since I received the package and began making milk kefir. I will start saying that I have been fermenting milk kefir for years, but could not keep up last year due to personal issues and needed to order new grains. The grains shipped fast (2 business days). When I received them, I was a bit shocked at how microscopic the amount was. I would rather pay more to receive a higher amount and would have probably ordered two packets had I known how tiny the shipped amount was. As per instructions, I placed them in 1 and 1/2 cups of milk in warm location. In 24 hours there were only minimal signs of fermentation. For the next batch I reduced the milk to 1/2 cup and it did ferment fully. After that, the grains picked up quickly and are fermenting 1/2L of milk in just a few days. They are very active and multiplying, albeit tiny in diameter. Being so tiny, sometimes it makes it hard to strain from the fermented milk. The kefir is mild flavoured and thick, overall quality is very good.

I cannot believe that I am now making kefir on my own – of course with the help of the milk kefir grain starter from Kefir Garden. The packages came within a week and then I started my quest to create homemade kefir. I chose A2 milk from a local source in Ontario. It has a bit of cream at the top. I kept the bottle warm through the 24 hours. When I saw the curds and whey forming I put in the fridge for the next 12 hour. The resulting kefir is delicious. I have made to servings already and now I can cut down on store-bought kefir.
I did write Kefir Garden on the bacterial strains that are contained in the grains. They will soon be analyzing this through a University lab. Cannot wait.

I purchased these grains in late September. I put off reviewing them until now, because I was hoping to be able to give a better review. Unfortunately, this is just not working out for me. I have followed the instructions to the letter, including using thermometers, moving the kefir to different areas of the house, using different varieties of milk (organic, 2%, etc.) using different sized containers, etc. No matter what I do, I end up with a bitter, watery kefir with disgusting curdled lumps. I reached out for advice and was referred back to the same instructions I’d been following. That said, it does seem the grains are alive so I can’t in good conscience give fewer stars as I did receive what was advertised. It’s always possible I’m just very stupid and can’t make this work. Overall, this has been a very disappointing experience.

Longer version: Professional packaging, 1st time kefir maker here, rinsed them a couple of times with fresh milk, and then followed the guide, 24 hours later got my 1st batch of kefir. Very happy with it. I couldn’t believe my runny nose stopped after 2 days of slow starting (2 tbsp/day). My runny nose started a week after cov19vax and have had it every single day ever since for months! Very annoying! Thinking it’s a fluke, I didn’t have kefir for 2 days and boom, runny nose again! Tried this twice, same results. Now I know my body is benefiting in other ways I haven’t noticed yet.
After making kefir every day for a couple of weeks and more than doubling the grains, I thought I had killed the grains by keeping them in the jar in the fridge with the same milk for about a week. So I contacted Evelyn and got my questions answered promptly! Back on track again and I’m a very happy customer 🙂

Your Kefir grains are doing very well here on the west coast! Ordered on May 15th — seamless and painless delivery through Canada Post. Started first batch around May 22 and have yet to make one bad batch. Now, experimenting with secondary fermentation trying to find out which fruits appeal the most. I am very happy with my kefir grains. I have found these kefir garden grains to be very resilient. Because we didn’t upgrade the shipping, it took almost 3 weeks to arrive. Then I placed them into my oven with the oven light on and the jar reached a temp of 40! That probably should have cooked them. I was afraid they were ruined because my next couple batches tasted like sour cream mixed with vinegar. So after a couple batches like that I started to do some research and realized back in the day before fridges. The milk would have been warm out of the cow and covered with a cloth rather than a metal lid. I decided I would start placing my grains into room temp milk and using a Muslim cloth to cover my jar instead of the screw on lid. I also started using a felt wool jar cover to help keep the chill off my glass jar. My kefir has been good since and my kefir grains have actually started to multiply. I am so happy with my purchase from Kefir Garden. Evelyn you have been so patient, concerned and helpful. I thank you so much for being so fantastic at customer service. I was a little nervous about getting this packet through the mail (via Amazon) but there was no problem at all. I read the simple instructions, put the jar in a warm spot in my office, and waited. I was very surprised how simple it was. I made 3 cups on my first batch (that was the size of only jar I could find) so I waited a little bit longer than 24 hours. What came out was very interesting. It all separated nicely using a steel collander. I put the kefir grains back in the bottle and filled it again. I took the kefir, added strawberries and a bit of maple syrup. Put in a blender and had a GREAT smoothie. It got even better 12 hours the fridge. I highly recommend Kefir Garden. The hand written note was VERY much appreciated.

I was worried the package took more than a week to arrive and temperatures in Canada are unforgiving. It was -10C the night it arrived. I left it on the counter to ‘defrost’, next morning I opened and was a bit disappointed by the tiny amount in the pocket. Followed the instructions left in the oven with light on 24H. Perfect Kefir. My only problem was the slight acidity but I am working on it 🙂 In a week I made three runs and each time it was perfect and more consistent it seems. Note: Videos are very well made and I recommend watching them and following them even if used to make kefir or yoghourt from ferment like myself. 👨🍳

Instructions were easy to follow. I contacted the seller with questions about a certain brand of milk and the cool temperature in our house and they got back to me right away and were friendly and helpful.
My first batch of kefir (in a 66°F house) took a little over 24 hours and was delicious! My grains are multiplying very quickly, so I have to remove some of them every few days to keep the process slow and batches small, otherwise I end up with more kefir than I can use.
I suggest you do some research on making kefir. The information that comes with the grains will definitely give good results, but experimenting a little might lead to a method that works better for you and help you realize that it’s a pretty forgiving process, and can be done in several ways. For a different taste and texture, I have started doing a second fermentation (straining out the grains and leaving the kefir in a sealed jar at room temperature for 24 hours) before refrigerating it. It’s delicious at room temperature, cold, used in overnight oatmeal, made into frozen cubes for using in smoothies, replacing buttermilk in recipes… The possibilities are endless!
I have frozen some grains in case something happens to mine, but I definitely would not hesitate to buy them from Kefir Garden again if needed, and I highly recommend them.

This sat in my mailbox for a few days; didn’t matter. It worked well with the oven method.
A few batches later, there were so many grains, I made chip dip! Not the best, but I scraped the bottom of the bowl clean. I am going to try a dill weed recipe next time.
There is a learning curve. I like to put a little coffee cream in the batch. And now that I am not so suspicious about what I am drinking, I down it the way I downed milk as a kid. You get a very satisfying burp, and it is like velvet in your stomach.
Once you have this stater batch, you can grow all the grains you want, and store back ups in little dope bags in your freezer.
The instructions are first rate, a little art, a little science. They seem like the kind of people you would like to have over for a dinner party.

I’ve had kefir grains in the past and honestly when I got these, I wasn’t even sure there were any (I couldn’t see them!) I decided to trust that they were there and put them in fresh milk. Addition 22 July 2019: Today was my fourth batch and it is perfect. I found that a temperature of about 72 degrees F produced exactly what I want. Thick, creamy and bubbly. I switched to 3.25% cow’s milk. The goat milk from the store just isn’t fresh, and I can’t have a goat in town. If I could, I’d give Kefir Garden and their service a solid 10 stars!

I really enjoyed store bought milk kefir and thought “Why not try making my own?”. I ordered these grains and emailed the seller (Evelyn) for some information about starting my initial batch. I followed her advice and in the month since receiving the grains I have gone from culturing 375ml of kefir every 24 hours, to 2 liters every 24 hours.
I wish I had taken a picture of the grains I received so I could compare them to the grains I have today. What started out as probably less than a tablespoon is well over a 1/4 cup. At this point, the kefir production has ramped up so substantially that I may have to leave the kefir in the fridge to culture for a time just to slow it down.
The kefir tastes great and I’m kind of addicted to it at this point.

I was surprised when I got this starter as the starter I had before was small pearly type balls, this is nothing like that…more like irregular clumps. But it works, that the main thing as at a cost of WAY cheaper than store bought kefir.
